Pens by Phil

Current work

These photographs are not all to the same scale. They are here to show the work and the grain of the different woods. Every pen below can also be turned from any of the other woods.

The Gentleman's pen in African blackwood with a pale burl section, finished in rhodium-platinum with a gold band, capped and lying at an angle.

Gentleman's Platinum in African blackwood

$249

The Gentleman's is a desk pen. Its cap turns smoothly off and, unlike the Artisan, does not attach to the back of the pen while you write. In rhodium-platinum against African blackwood, it is an elegant addition to any desk.

The Americana pen in African blackwood, finished in rhodium-platinum, with a cursive initial inlaid in sterling silver on the cap.

Americana in African blackwood, with custom silver inlay

$329

The Americana is made only as a rhodium-platinum fountain pen, and its cap snaps onto the back of the pen while in use.

This one shows my custom inlay work; it was made for an executive at Video Egg. Inlay and banding are worth a phone call rather than an email; there is usually something to talk through.

The same pen, no sterling silver: $229
The Artisan pen in redwood burl, a mottled red-brown wood, finished in 22K gold, capped and lying at an angle.

Artisan in redwood burl

$199

The Artisan is finished only in 22K gold, alloyed with cobalt to produce the most durable gold finish available. Its cap snaps onto the back of the pen while you write, which is what makes this the easiest model to carry and use daily.

The Artisan pen in cocobolo, a dark red-brown striped wood, finished in 22K gold, capped and lying at an angle.

Artisan in cocobolo

$199

The same Artisan pen, turned from cocobolo. Set the two side by side and you have the argument for buying a wooden pen: identical in every dimension, and not remotely the same object.

The Gentleman's pen in birdseye maple, a pale golden wood flecked with small dark eyes, finished in 22K gold.

Gentleman's 22K Gold in birdseye maple

$219

The same desk pen in 22K gold, where the warm hardware and the pale, freckled maple work on each other. As with the platinum, the cap does not attach to the back of the pen while writing.

Every pen is unique

The pen you receive will not be the pen in the photograph. Wood does not repeat itself, and that is the point of the whole exercise. Where a particular wood varies a great deal from piece to piece, it is noted in the description.

Satisfaction guaranteed

Any pen can be returned for a full refund or an exchange, as long as it comes back in new condition.
